- The objective of the project, that is supported by ACCIÓ, is to improve the nutritional habits and physical activity of children aged between 6 and 12 years, starting with the introduction of game dynamics in school canteens across Catalonia.
- In Catalonia there are 2,000 school canteens where around 400,000 pupils and teachers can eat every day.
- Interviews will be carried out to discover the needs and interests of families, pupils, cooks, supervisors, headteachers and administrators, in order to design and offer scientifically evaluated solutions.
- A points system and a competitive support system will award the best healthy practices and habits, which can be redeemed in different ways in an attractive manner for the participants.
SERHS Food, Campos Estela and Clúster Foodservice, along with the collaboration of Eurecat technological centre, have started the Edugam project, which will design an innovative program of education and promotion of healthy lifestyles based on gamification, directed at primary school canteens in Catalan schools.
Along these lines, the project, that is supported by the Cataluña Clusters program from the Agency for the Competitiveness of Business (ACCIÓ) of the Generalitat of Catalonia, will be structured in a system of points and competitive support that will reward goals that are achieved by the education centres regarding the best healthy habits and practices, and that can also be exchanged in different, attractive ways for the participants, using digital support such as a web page or an app.
The objective of the Edugam project is to improve the nutritional habits and physical activity of children between the ages of 6 and 12 years old using gamification, through game dynamics in an environment such as a school canteen.
In the Edugam framework, in the first phase that will begin soon, focus groups will be established with the objective of discovering the needs and interests of families, pupils, cooks, supervisors, headteachers and administrators, among others, in order to eventually design an effective program and offer scientifically evaluated solutions.
In Catalonia there are almost 480,000 primary school children and 2,000 canteens in public schools, grammar schools and private schools. It is estimated that the majority of students eat at school, although there is no official concrete data.
Regarding the catering in these schools, one-third is managed by the school itself, and the other two-thirds by external companies, both on site and on a cold line transported from a central kitchen (mainly through agreements or in competition with Ampas or Regional Councils).
This is a strategic segment and a stage in which the lifestyle will affect their own future and where, at the same time, the values learned will generally be passed on to their children and environment. For this reason, Edugam is of great importance and significance in the sector, which goes beyond a partial vision of the objective, shared by the entire group of companies and all the entities that want to join this initiative.
CLUSTER Foodservice is coordinating the Edugam project, and SERHS Food and Campos Estela are participating as service providers for school canteens, obtaining information about the objectives and the desire to create shared values that contribute to improving the participants’ lifestyles. Eurecat, the technological centre, will be in charge of designing the program.
